Sickle cell is a disease that causes the red blood cells to change shape and become inflexible, which caused the “sickled” cells to stick to the walls of blood vessels, resulting in an inadequate supply of red blood cells to deliver oxygen throughout the body. It’s an inherited group of disorders, red blood cells contort into a sickle shape.
The cells die early, leaving a shortage of healthy red blood cells (sickle cell anemia), and can block blood flow causing pain (sickle cell crisis). In sickle cell disease, red blood cells are misshaped, typically crescent- or “sickle”-shaped due to a gene mutations that affects the hemoglobin molecule. It’s caused by a mutation in the beta globin gene, which is responsible for making hemoglobin.
Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells which carries oxygen to all parts of the body. The abnormal hemoglobin causes the red blood cells to be rigid and shaped like a C, or sickle. Sickle cells can get stuck in blood vessels (vaso-occlusion) and block blood flow.
Vaso-occlusion can cause intense pain, stroke, pneumonia and other organ damage, and vaso-occlusion in the spleen increases the risk of life-threatening infections. Sickle cells also break down faster than normal red blood cells, leading to anemia.”
When red blood cells sickle, they do not bend or move easily and can block blood flow to the rest of the body.
This condition causes severe pain & can lead to sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell typically last 10-20 days, while non-sickle red blood cells last 90 to 120 days. The low number of red blood cells can cause severe fatigue.
