Curcuma longa also known as Turmeric is a plant within the ginger family. It’s native to Southeast Asia & it’s grown commercially in that region, primarily in India. It’s a rhizome which means it’s a underground stem. It’s been used in traditional medicine for centuries.
Turmeric contains a powerful ingredient called curcumin, & contain bioactive compounds and medicinal properties including, curcuminoids, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, & antioxidants. Curcumin is also fat soluble, which means it breaks down & dissolves in fat or oil.
Turmeric has been historically used in Ayurveda & other traditional Indian medical systems, as well as Eastern Asian medical systems such as traditional Chinese medicine. In India, it was traditionally used for disorders of the skin, upper respiratory tract, joints, inflammation, arthritis, digestive disorders, respiratory infections, allergies, swelling, liver disease, depression, & to help aid with the digestive system.
Turmeric is a common spice and a major ingredient in curry powder. Curcumin is a major component of turmeric, and the activities of turmeric are commonly attributed to curcuminoids (curcumin and closely related substances). Curcumin gives turmeric its yellow color.
