Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)

Milk Thistle, (Silybum marianum) a native European plant with vibrant purple flowers, has been used in natural medicines for centuries. Its active compound, silymarin, a flavonoid, influences various biological pathways within the body, offering potential benefits for liver health, managing type 2 diabetes, and supporting digestion. Silymarin acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, making it a valuable ally in protecting the liver.

Traditionally used as a complementary aid for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis, and alcohol-related liver damage, Milk Thistle also helps lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin resistance in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it is sometimes taken to alleviate indigestion, bloating, and upset stomachs.

Derived from the milk thistle plant, scientifically known as Silybum marianum, this prickly plant boasts distinctive purple flowers and white veins. Legends claim that these features were caused by a drop of the Virgin Mary’s milk falling onto its leaves.

The active ingredients in Milk Thistle are a group of plant compounds collectively known as silymarin. Milk Thistle extract, a herbal remedy, concentrates silymarin from the milk thistle plant, providing a high concentration of this beneficial compound. Silymarin extracted from Milk Thistle has been traditionally used to treat liver and gallbladder disorders, promote breast milk production, prevent and treat cancer, and protect the liver from snake bites, alcohol, and other environmental poisons. It also offers potential benefits in preventing age-related decline in brain function.
